Government asks whether QOF should be scrapped, in GP incentives consultation
The government has launched a consultation on the role of incentive schemes in general practice in England, which could see the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) altered or even scrapped in the future.1The consultation, which will run until 7 March 2024, will seek feedback on the two main schemes in England—QOF and the Investment and Impact Fund (IIF)—and asks whether these schemes should “form part of the income for general practice.” It will also look at how the administrative burden of such schemes could be reduced for clinicians and “possible changes in scope of incentive schemes beyond clinical indicators.”The consultation document said, “The current schemes need to adapt and respond to the changing needs of our population and the evolving priorities in healthcare.”QOF, introduced to general practice in 2004, now consists of 76 indicators in areas such as chronic kidney disease, heart failure, hypertension, cervical screening, and vaccinations.2 The IIF…
