ADHD: GPs demand action to support England’s “shamefully underfunded” services

Local general practice leaders have called for urgent action to tackle chronic underfunding of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) services in England.The annual conference of England’s local medical committees (LMCs) in London on 23 November carried a motion demanding that NHS England remedy a situation that has seen NHS services for ADHD across all ages starved of funding, creating huge waiting lists and barriers to accessing care.The motion was proposed by Lucy Clement of Leeds LMC, who described her own experience of having ADHD diagnosed four years ago. She said that ADHD services had been “shamefully underfunded for years, despite children and adults with ADHD experiencing some of the worst health inequalities and poor outcomes in society today.”The motion demanded the introduction of a new direct enhanced service payment—like the one GPs receive for patients with severe mental illness and learning disabilities—to fund annual ADHD health checks and the extra workload…
