Measles cases and deaths are increasing worldwide, say WHO and CDC

The world faces a growing measles crisis with cases and deaths rising, the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have said in a joint report.12From 2021 to 2022 measles cases increased internationally by 18% and measles deaths by 43%, they said.WHO and CDC are founding members of the Measles and Rubella Partnership, a global initiative to stop the two diseases. It aims to increase vaccine coverage, especially for the most vulnerable communities, and to help prevent outbreaks.In 2022, 37 countries reported measles outbreaks compared with 22 countries in 2021. Of the 37 countries, 28 were in the WHO region for Africa, six in the eastern Mediterranean, two in South East Asia, and one in the European region.In 2022 more than nine million children had measles and more than 136 000 people, mostly children, died from measles.
