CBT can help with a range of menopausal symptoms, says NICE
Cognitive behavioural therapy can help to reduce menopause symptoms, including hot flushes and night sweats, depressive symptoms, and problems sleeping, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has said in draft updated guidance.1Previous NICE guidance on diagnosing and treating menopause, published in 2015, only recommended considering CBT to alleviate low mood or anxiety linked with the menopause.2But new evidence showed that CBT can also reduce the frequency and severity of hot flushes and night sweats and the extent to which they bothered women, trans men, and non-binary people registered female at birth, and should be considered alongside or as an alternative to hormone replacement therapy (HRT), the draft guidance says.CBT was also found to help reduce sleep problems related to menopause, including how long it takes to fall asleep and time asleep.NICE says that the evidence on the risks and benefits of taking HRT has become clearer since the…
