Doctors call on GMC to publish guidance on social media posts on the Israel-Hamas war
A group of 148 doctors have called on the General Medical Council to publish clear guidance on “what is acceptable for doctors to ‘like,’ post, and state on social media from medical accounts.” The demand comes after a series of posts and shares of politicised content around the Israel-Hamas war from doctor-identified accounts.The letter, sent on 10 November, highlights recent use of inflammatory hashtags, cartoons, and memes in posts shared by some doctor-identified accounts. It says, “If some people regulated by the GMC are expressing [such views] then this may inevitably impact on their interactions with colleagues and patients. Only the GMC has the overarching position to tackle these difficult but important matters.
