Why I can’t continue to strike
I am a consultant in the NHS and a member of the BMA. I did not participate in the last two rounds of strikes,1 although I took part earlier in July and August. I don’t think industrial action should continue because we are causing more problems for a struggling health service. More people than ever are on the NHS waiting list to see a specialist; patients with cancer are waiting too long for diagnoses and treatment. Recent data show that more than a million NHS appointments were cancelled because of doctors’ industrial action, and morally I cannot continue to strike.There is a huge conflict of interest here. Long NHS waiting lists are forcing people to spend money out of pocket for private healthcare, and this is benefitting consultants who practise privately.
