Health services must adapt to changes in the way that doctors want to progress their careers, the General Medical Council has said. Doctors were increasingly choosing flexible and less linear career pathways that could benefit UK health services by reducing burnout and dissatisfaction among the profession, said the regulator in its annual report on the state of medical education and practice.1More doctors were taking time away from postgraduate training after their second foundation year, and linear progression through postgraduate training was increasingly rare, changes that workforce planners needed to keep pace with, said GMC chief executive Charlie Massey. “The ability to provide good patient care, now and for the foreseeable future, depends on the ability to respond quickly to changing career pathways and to think clearly about making the most of the resources available,” he said.The report also said that the number of specialist, associate specialist, and specialty (SAS) and…
