Covid-19: excess death rates and the cost of living crisis
Now that the covid-19 pandemic is over, surely other non-covid factors should be considered to explain the failure of UK excess mortality rates to return to pre-pandemic levels?1I am not a public health doctor, but I don’t think it is a huge stretch of the imagination to suggest that the cost of living crisis linked to unusually high levels of inflation over a prolonged period, triggered in part by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, must be taking a toll on UK population health. This crisis began in early 2022, but was established by the summer of 2022, as inflation and energy costs rose.2The effects of the cost of living crisis have been widely reported in the media for over a year now.
