Strike action: BMA reballots consultants and ballots SAS doctors amid “constructive” talks
The BMA’s Consultants Committee is reballoting members as it seeks a renewed mandate for industrial action, as “constructive” talks with the government over its pay dispute continue.Consultants’ leaders said that, despite negotiations with the government starting last week, there had been “insufficient progress” for the committee to change its plans to start reballoting members for action from 6 November. On the same day the BMA also launched a formal ballot for strike action for specialist, associate specialist, and specialty (SAS) doctors in England. The BMA’s SAS Committee is also currently engaged in negotiations with the government over pay.Ujjwala Anad Mohite, chair of the SAS Committee, said, “While talks continue to progress, we are clearly still somewhat short of the credible offer we are asking government for. We are therefore asking SAS doctors to give us the mandate for action, should we need it because the current round of talks fail.”The…
