Macchiarini: Lancet retracts two papers on first tissue engineered trachea transplant
The Lancet has retracted two papers by the disgraced surgeon Paolo Macchiarini,1 after an investigation by the Swedish National Board for Assessment of Research Misconduct concluded that they contained falsified information.The initial paper had described the case of a patient who in 2008 became the first person to have a tissue engineered trachea transplant,2 and the second article was a five year follow-up on the patient.3The retractions follow Macchiarini being sentenced to 30 months in prison, after the Court of Appeal in Stockholm concluded that his interventions on three patients who later died amounted to serious assault.4The Lancet had previously decided not to retract the papers, opting instead to issue expressions of concern in February this year.5 This was despite researchers and clinicians urging the journal to do so, including through a letter published in The BMJ.6However, in a statement issued on 28 October the Lancet said that it had…
