After qualifying he completed his training with hospital jobs in Belfast, Ballymena, Coleraine, and Londonderry. He started his GP career in Carlisle Terrace, Londonderry, in 1957.Harry was a very capable physician, well liked by patients and colleagues. He served all sections of a divided community through the Northern Ireland troubles until his retirement in 1993.He also worked as an occupational physician with the local council and at Altnagelvin Hospital.He was an active member of the BMA and local medical committee for many years but also found time to socialise with the local Round Table and 41 Club. In retirement, he continued working as a locum until he was 70.Harry was an avid reader, particularly of military history and current affairs.
