He met Eileen, a student nurse at Great Ormond Street Hospital, when she was a third year student at St Helier Hospital in Carshalton. They married in 1970.In 1973 he joined Mowbray House Surgery, an expanding semirural practice in Northallerton, as an assistant and became a partner six months later. He established himself as a hardworking doctor with a dry sense of humour, popular with his partners, staff, and patients. He had a longstanding interest in dermatology and for a time was a clinical assistant at the local hospital. He was a willing resource for registrars and partners alike. He took on responsibility for the same rural patch within the 300 square miles that the practice covered, until he retired.Andrew retired in 2003 after 30 years as a partner, to enjoy 20 years of happy retirement.
