There is an overlap between long covid and ME/CFS

Thank you for highlighting the devastation long covid has wrought on healthcare workers’ lives, including my own.1 I would go further than the BMA and suggest that long covid be considered an occupational disease for anyone in the UK exposed at work.It is important to point out the overlap between long covid and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), as highlighted in a recent Nature paper.2 Key common symptoms including post-exertional malaise, neurocognitive symptoms, and dysautonomia, as well as overlapping immunopathology, protein markers, and signalling pathways. 3Among the greatest challenges long covid patients face is the lack of access to diagnosis, management, and treatment on the NHS4—struggles that are familiar to patients with ME/CFS and their families, who still struggle to access even life sustaining treatments reliably,5 despite the excellent guidance that is available.678910While the publication of the Department of Health and Social Care’s interim delivery plan on ME/CFS11 is a…
