Health centre for retirees is named UK’s best new building of 2023

bmj;383/oct24_7/p2466/FAF1faJim Stephenson/RIBAA healthcare day centre for the residents of a London retirement community has been awarded the Royal Institute of British Architects’ prestigious Stirling prize for best new building of the year.The John Morden Centre was designed by the architects’ firm Mæ to complement existing buildings on the grounds of the grade I listed Mordern College, in Blackheath, which include an almshouse and chapel attributed to Christopher Wren. The new building is arranged as a series of red brick “pavilions” housing care and social spaces around a central timber “cloister.” A zinc clad roof and high chimneys echo those of its 17th century neighbours.The centre integrates medical facilities with a range of recreational spaces to encourage personal connections and counter social isolation.
