Investing in community care saves money for the wider NHS, analysis shows

For every £100 spent in the community care sector there is a 31% return on investment in acute sector savings, a new analysis shows.1The latest report in a series commissioned by the NHS Confederation shows that investing in community services not only helps to reduce hospital admissions but also saves the NHS money.Areas of the country that spent relatively less on community care in terms of population need have seen higher than average levels of hospital and emergency activity compared with those spending relatively more, the analysis conducted by the consultancy firm Carnall Farrar found.The research compared those integrated care systems that were in the top 10% of spending per head on community care weighted for population need with those in the bottom decile.
