Women who were denied abortions despite serious medical problems, their doctors, and a medical association are suing three US states—Idaho, Oklahoma, and Tennessee—for not providing the care that they needed.1The legal action follows a similar move by five women who sued Texas in March for denying abortions in cases of serious problems for both the woman and her fetus.2 The women and doctors were represented by the Center for Reproductive Rights.Last year the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional right to abortion and returned the matter to the states, about half of which now ban or severely limit abortions.34 State laws vary and both doctors and their professional organisations have complained the laws are vague and leave doctors uncertain whether their best professional judgment, a national standard of care, might be considered illegal and subject them to severe fines, loss of license, or imprisonment.Such vague laws have led physicians to…
