Palmer and Rosen highlight the missing pieces and uncertainty around NHS England’s long awaited workforce plan.1 Key is the need for a supplement to the plan to explain how the plan will be implemented. The reality is that, as the NHS celebrates 75 years, it needs to look backwards, forwards, and outwards for learning and solutions.The NHS in 2023 is not dissimilar to the British motor industry in the 1970s—government ministers were actively involved in the daily running of British Leyland Motor Corporation, including industrial relations and even strategic plans of car designs and sales. The NHS is often compared to a supertanker, and a meaningful long term plan to join the dots might require us to build smaller regional vessels aligned with local authorities.
