bmj;382/aug30_5/p1982/FAF1faSimon W MacGowan entered the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1977, following in the footsteps of his father, who was a graduate, professor of surgery, and then registrar, and to be accompanied later by his younger brother, so for a time there were three MacGowans at the same medical school. Simon qualified in 1983, entered junior doctor training in Dublin, and found his love for surgery. He went to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, between 1989 and 1991, undertaking a research fellowship looking into oxygen free radicals in pancreatitis, for which he gained a masters degree. On returning to Dublin he started training in cardiac surgery at the Mater Hospital. In January 1992 he married Sandy, a physiotherapist, who had grown up on the same road in Dublin.
