He made use of one of his long vacations to cycle to Jerusalem, on a sit-up-and-beg bike with three speed gears. However, perhaps motivated by his mother’s early death, and inspired partly by his work as a volunteer at St Christopher’s Hospice, he then undertook undergraduate medical training at St Thomas’. After house jobs he was selected for the GP vocational training scheme in Portsmouth. The rotation included monstrously demanding post in obstetrics and paediatrics, but John was an enthusiast, of sound body and mind, and thrived despite the intensity of the work. With his maturity, good looks, charm, and inexhaustible good humour, he could tame the most ferocious ward sister.After his trainee year in Havant, John was appointed as a partner in Liss, Hampshire, where he worked for his whole career, guiding the practice through the numerous contractual…
