bmj;382/aug25_8/p1949/FAF1faAnna Elizabeth Jones (née Gilmour) qualified in Northern Ireland and after several house jobs, during the second world war she served as a surgeon lieutenant Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve at Bristol and then at the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar (BMA News Review 1978;4(5):286). She treated armed forces returning from prisoner of war camps in Japan and described their appalling physical and mental condition. On demobilisation she pursued a career in public health and spent several years working in child welfare clinics and schools in West Glamorgan, south Wales. In 1962 she was appointed as an administrative medical officer in Manchester, where in time she was promoted to deputy medical officer of health. After reorganisation of the health service she was appointed medical officer environmental health for the City of Manchester.
