Former deputy chief medical officer Jonathan Van-Tam joins Moderna as clinical adviser

England’s former deputy chief medical officer Jonathan Van-Tam, who became a recognisable face during the covid pandemic, has taken up a new role advising the covid vaccine maker Moderna.In a statement posted on LinkedIn,1 the pharmaceutical and biotechnology company announced that Van-Tam had been “appointed as a part-time consulting Clinical Advisor, reporting to Chief Medical Officer Paul Burton.” He started the role in May. It added that the appointment, which came just over a year after Van-Tam left the Department of Health and Social Care, was “in accordance with the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) in England’s Business Appointment Rules policy.”2Concerns have previously been raised over Van-Tam’s conflicts of interests, especially after he was appointed as England’s deputy chief medical officer in 2017—a role he held until March 2022.
