Debate has intensified recently about the dangers of unbridled artificial intelligence (AI) to society.1 Nowhere are the problems more pressing than in the medical field, as bias may disproportionately damage the health of certain groups. Concerted action is needed now to ensure bias-free AI medical devices in the future, starting by increasing transparency and understanding.AI is embedded in every aspect of health care from cancer screening and diagnostics to clinical decision making in surgery and genomics.
