Because of his premature birth, his health was fragile throughout his life.He spent part of his childhood during the second world war, and he used to cycle 25 miles a day to deliver fresh food to the people living in Milan. His father had cardiac problems and had to leave his job in a bank, with the main income ceasing and leaving the family in relative financial difficulties. Claudio used to say that he went through university with the same pair of trousers as he could not afford a new one.
