bmj;382/jul28_7/p1733/FAF1faJames David Bradshaw trained in Manchester, specialising initially in respiratory medicine, before retraining in oncology and particularly radiotherapy at the Holt Radium Institute at the Christie Hospital.Between his two periods of specialty training, David completed his national service as an medical officer in the Royal Air Force. One night in 1953, he unexpectedly became acting station commander when Group Captain OA Richmond and Squadron Leader RP Charter were killed when their plane an Avro Anson crashed on Snae Fell, Isle of Man.David was a registrar in radiotherapy at the Christie’s molecular radiotherapy unit and subsequently a consultant radiotherapist at Leicester Royal Infirmary (1964-77) and a consultant radiotherapist to Sheffield Health Authority, based at Weston Park Hospital (1977-89).His patients appreciated his soft spoken approach, and a former colleague describes him as a wise and extremely competent oncologist, whose clinical judgment could always be relied on.
