Community of spoon carving

I read with interest the article reflecting on spoon carving as a pastime and how consultant surgeon Matt Gardiner finds the process relaxing and rewarding.1 I would like to reassure your readers that not only those from the craft specialties can enjoy this craft. I have been carving spoons since just before the covid-19 pandemic and identify with all the benefits that Gardiner describes. I would like to add another dimension and a little advice.Travelling to festivals is a way to immerse yourself in a subject, but those starting out in a new hobby might appreciate a gentler introduction. The online carving community Rise Up and Carve (https://www.riseupandcarve.com/) is a perfect introduction. At 6 am every day, carvers from across the UK, together with those from Canada, Germany, Israel, New Zealand, the United States, and elsewhere, log on to a permanently open Zoom meeting and start (or end) their days…
