John Ashton Dodge
John Ashton Dodge died after a long illness aged 89. He was born in Cardiff in 1933. This gave his speaking voice a wonderful Welsh lilt that remained with him throughout his life. He decided on a career in paediatrics shortly after qualifying, spending two years in Boston and Harvard from 1961 to 1963. In 1964 he was appointed lecturer in child health at Queen’s University Belfast, establishing a cystic fibrosis clinic for Northern Ireland. In 1971 he returned to Cardiff to set up the first cystic fibrosis and paediatric gastroenterology clinics in Wales. In 1985 he returned to Belfast as head of department, occupying the vacant Nuffield chair of child health. He served on the councils of the British Paediatric Association; the British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition; and the Royal College of Physicians (London).
