UK reȷects Scottish government’s plan to decriminalise drugs
The UK government has been urged to decriminalise all drugs for personal use and to focus on supporting and treating drug users rather than punishing them.In a paper outlining what is described as a compassionate, evidence based approach to drug policy,1 the Scottish government called on the UK to introduce new measures to help reduce the death toll from drug use in Scotland, which is the highest in Europe.2Drug policy is controlled by Westminster, and the Scottish government says that the current punitive legislative approach is making it more difficult to offer support and help to drug users. In addition to decriminalising drugs for personal supply, it wants to implement harm reduction measures such as supervised facilities where people can inject drugs in a safe environment.
