We were promised a workforce plan in 2017, and at last it has arrived.1 Just as in an exam where some marks are awarded merely for turning up and writing your name at the top of the page, we must be glad that we finally have something on paper. There’s a recognition from NHS England that we have a major shortfall of medical and nursing staff and that, without radical action, things will only get worse.Some of the ambitions of this plan are welcome, but it’s not clear how the projected growth in training will be achieved. It will pose a significant challenge to medical schools, which are asked to double their student numbers by 2031.
