Lung cancer screening for over 55s will be rolled out in England
People aged 55-74 with a history of smoking will be invited for lung cancer screening and smoking cessation services as part of a new programme aimed at improving survival rates.Lung cancer screening was recommended by the UK National Screening Committee last year, and while “lung health checks” have been rolled out in some parts of England, a comprehensive screening programme has not yet been implemented.1 The government has said that the first phase of rollout will reach 40% of the eligible population by March 2025 and plans to reach 100% coverage by March 2030. The programme will cost around £270m a year once fully implemented.Lung cancer survival rates are some of the lowest among all cancers: 16.2% of people live beyond five years with the condition and only 9.5% beyond 10 years.
