Consultants in England plan to strike for two days in July over pay
Consultants in England will walk out on 20 and 21 July, the BMA has announced, after more than 20 000 voted for industrial action over pay.The union balloted members from 15 May to 27 June and saw a turnout of 71% (24 106), with 86% of those voting for strike action.The BMA’s Consultants Committee chair, Vishal Sharma, said, “This vote shows how furious consultants are at being repeatedly devalued by government. Consultants are not worth a third less than we were 15 years ago and have had enough.” The union has said that take home pay for consultants in England has fallen by 35% since 2008-09.Sharma has written to England’s health secretary, Steve Barclay, to inform him of the upcoming strike action. He told Barclay that the government could still avert the walkout by presenting a credible pay offer and a commitment to meaningful reform of the pay review process….
