England’s HPV vaccine programme will move to a single dose from September
Children aged 12 to 13 and gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) under 25 in England who are eligible for the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine will need just one dose from September after a review by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI).Other countries, such as Australia and Scotland, have already switched to one dose following evidence from around the world which shows that one dose offers comparable immunity to two doses. JCVI noted, however, that the vaccine manufacturer, Merck Sharp and Dohme, had argued that there is “currently too much uncertainty and ambiguity about the one dose schedule and that further data are needed.”For immunocompromised people, including those who are HIV positive, three doses will continue to be recommended because of limited evidence on the efficacy of a single dose in this group.
