Industrial action: Trusts agree to pay consultants more to cover ȷuniors’ strike

NHS trusts in London have agreed higher rates of pay for consultants to cover impending action by junior doctors, who are due to undertake a full 72 hour walkout between 7 am on 14 June and 7am on 17 June.Ahead of this action, more than 1000 senior doctors were reported to have signed a letter urging NHS London and London hospital trusts to pay consultants and staff and associate grade (SAS) doctors who are providing strike cover outside their contract the rates recommended by the BMA.1 The BMA’s rate cards recommend that extracontractual work undertaken by consultants and autonomous SAS doctors be paid at a rate of £161 an hour for weekday working, £215 an hour on a weekend, and £269 an hour overnight.23The letter, seen by The BMJ, said that it supported junior doctors’ right to take action but that NHS London and London trusts had failed to engage…
