bmj;381/jun06_15/p1292/FAF1faAfter qualifying Thomas Powell (“Tom”) trained in radiology, and was appointed consultant radiologist in 1967. He initially worked at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, and the newly opened Weston Park Hospital. He was appointed as a neuroradiologist in 1981, taking on additional duties as head of radiological training in 1987, also examining for the Royal College of Radiologists.He had a passion for trekking and went to the Karakoram trail, climbing Gondoro Peak. In subsequent years he climbed to Mount Everest base camp, Mera Peak, and the Andes.Utterly dedicated to a career of service to his patients in a demanding specialty, Tom was also a greatly respected teacher and an inspiration to many radiologists who came through the department.
