Doctor who acted as middleman in organ trafficking attempt is jailed for 10 years

A doctor “middleman” who conspired with a Nigerian couple to traffic an impoverished young street trader to the UK to provide a kidney for their daughter has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.Obinna Obeta, who was paid a fee by the Ekweremadu family, falsely told doctors at the Royal Free Hospital in London that the young man and Sonia Ekweremadu, 25, who has FSGS nephrotic syndrome, were cousins.Sonia’s father, Ike Ekweremadu, a former deputy president of the Nigerian senate, was sentenced to nine years eight months in prison and her mother, Beatrice Ekweremadu, to four years six months.
