US life expectancy reaches 25 year low

In 2021 life expectancy in the US fell for the second year in a row to reach 76.4 years, the lowest since 1996, reports from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have said.12 The drop in life expectancy was due primarily to increased numbers of deaths from covid-19 and from drug overdoses.The age specific death rate rose from 2020 to 2021 in every age group over 1 year old. The greatest increases were among young and middle aged adults, with a 13.4% increase in the 25-34 year age group, a 16.1% increase in the 35-44 group, and a 12.1% increase in the 45-54 group.The age adjusted death rate in the total population increased 5.3% from 2020 to 2021, on top of a 16.8% increase from 2019 to 2020.In 2021 a total of 3 464 231 deaths were registered in the US, 80 502 more than in 2020.
