The government must make retention of GPs as much of a priority as their recruitment, GP representatives have warned.They were responding to recruitment figures showing that 4032 doctors have accepted GP training places in 2022, against a target of 4000. The figures from Health Education England show that the number of doctors opting to train as GPs has exceeded targets for a fifth year in a row.However, while welcoming the healthy interest in GP training, medical leaders have warned that “much more effort” needs to be put into retaining GPs, as the profession is haemorrhaging more GPs than it gains every year.Kamila Hawthorne, chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners, said, “We have now reached a situation where more experienced GPs are leaving the profession than are entering it, and unfortunately, this won’t be enough to meet the current or future healthcare needs of a growing and ageing population…
