bmj;379/nov23_18/o2770/FAF1faKenneth Gilmour Lowry (“Ken”) was born the eldest of three siblings to Elizabeth and Norman, in Seahill, Craigavad, County Down. He was educated at nearby Glencraig Primary School, Sullivan Upper Grammar School, and Manchester University. He would go on to forge a formidable career in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine.He returned to Northern Ireland to begin training in anaesthesia, achieving his royal college fellowship in 1982. He was appointed as a consultant, first at Altnagelvin Hospital (1986) and then at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast (1988). His major interest was intensive care medicine, a lifelong commitment that would underpin a career spanning some 30 years of working in the regional intensive care unit.
