bmj;379/nov18_6/o2771/FAF1faThe death of James Guy Edwards (“Guy”) leaves a big gap in the psychiatric scene in Southampton and within his circle of personal friendships. He was very much his own man, an intellectually stimulating colleague, and an excellent teacher. He also undertook the almost impossible task of combining full time clinical work with clinical research. By the time of his retirement he had about 130 publications to his credit (as principal author or coauthor) and more than 50 afterwards.He would not accept that there was “no time for research”; he made time for it—by spending an hour per day on a research related topic, collaborating with colleagues in psychiatric and non-psychiatric specialties, and obtaining small grants for studies that could be incorporated into his full time clinical work without interfering with it.After completing his psychiatric training in 1964, Guy worked for three years as a research psychiatrist at the Rockland…
