A plant based diet benefits personal and planetary health
Mahase’s article on how doctors can combat climate change only briefly mentioned recommending patients change to a whole food, plant based diet.1 But it should be much more prominent given that diet is thought to be the biggest single contributor to our personal impact on the planet, including greenhouse gas contributions.23A plant based diet also significantly reduces chronic disease risk,45 so for health professionals and patients it is a big win-win. We need better training to help health professionals both undertake and encourage plant based diets, such as that provided by the Plant Based Health Professionals UK6 and recommended by the General Medical Council7 and Education for Sustainable Healthcare Curriculum.8Behaviour change is possible,9 and health professionals should demonstrate it themselves and lead the way in facilitating patient change towards a whole foods, plant based or plant centred diet.
