Flu: Public urged to get vaccinated in face of possible surge of infections this winter
Experts are urging the UK public to get their winter vaccines, as early signs indicate that the NHS may be facing a surge in flu alongside covid-19 infections and a “substantial risk” of huge pressure from hospital admissions this winter.John McCauley, who was director of the World Health Organization’s Collaborating Centre for Influenza until recently, told a briefing at the Science Media Centre in London on 2 November: “There was basically no flu around due to the interventions imposed for Sars-CoV-2 for the northern hemisphere for the 2021-22 season. We’re seeing it pick up somewhat again over the past few weeks.“We need to anticipate an influenza season.
