bmj;379/oct27_7/o2558/FAF1faLeslie H Blumgart (“Les”), one of the world leaders in hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery, was a dominant figure in the evolution of HPB surgery around the world for almost 50 years. From 1991 he built one of the great HPB clinical and academic programmes at Memorial Sloane Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and trained a generation of surgical oncologists and surgeons who carry forward his legacy.The son of Harold Herman Blumgart and Hilda Blumgart, he attended Jeppe High School, Johannesburg, South Africa, and went on to study dentistry at University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, graduating BDS in 1954 before moving to the UK to study medicine at the University of Sheffield.
