Medical students—the fight for reproductive healthcare is ours
For US medical students, access to education about abortion is far from guaranteed. Abortion is one of the most common medical procedures, yet it is neglected in the curriculum of most US medical schools and sometimes absent entirely.1 With the recent overturning of Roe v Wade, these longstanding knowledge gaps will worsen for the 70.77% of US medical students whose training stands to be restricted by state laws,2 undoubtedly threatening the clinical knowledge and skills of future physicians. Crucially, it will also exacerbate existing inequalities in abortion care that contribute to our nation’s maternal morbidity and mortality crisis.3Despite the profound impact that overturning Roe will have on medical education, US medical schools have not taken a universal stance to support access to abortion education.
