bmj;378/sep30_3/o2333/FAF1faJohn Millie Dow Galloway (“Ian”) was born in Auchtermuchty, in central Fife, and attended Bell Baxter Grammar School, Cupar. He attended Edinburgh University Medical School, qualifying in 1960. After a year as an anatomy demonstrator, he did his postgraduate training in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and, finally, Aberdeen, where he worked with and was influenced by George Mavor. He completed his ChM on venous thrombosis.Ian was appointed to the then Hull Hospitals as a general surgeon with a vascular interest in 1970. Initially, he provided a singlehanded vascular service in addition to a busy general surgery workload. By 1979, with a consultant colleague and a close working relationship with the vascular radiologists, a vascular unit providing a round the clock service—both within Hul, and as a support to the other hospitals in east Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire—was developed.The vascular unit held weekly multidisciplinary team meetings and adopted endovascular treatments where appropriate.
