At-home early medical abortions will be made permanent in England and Wales
Access to early medical abortions at home will be made permanent in England and Wales from 30 August, the Department of Health and Social Care has said.The Abortion Act will be amended at the end of the month to allow eligible patients in the first nine weeks and six days of pregnancy to continue to access pills for early medical abortion through a teleconsultation and for both pills to be taken at home.This comes after the government had previously said that early medical abortion at home—introduced in March 2020 in response to the covid-19 pandemic—would end in August 2022. This led to dozens of medical organisations calling on the government to continue the service.
