New clinical presentations of monkeypoxWhat are the clinical outcomes for people diagnosed with monkeypox in the current outbreak? New research from sexual health centres in South London (BMJ 2022;378:e072410) identifies new clinical presentations of monkeypox in this current outbreak, including rectal pain and penile oedema.A cohort study from three sexual health clinics in Spain reports outcomes for 181 people who had a confirmed monkeypox diagnosis. All presented with skin lesions, with 78% having anogenital lesions and 43% with oral and perioral lesions. Three patients (2%) were admitted to hospital, and 39% had a complication requiring treatment: proctitis, tonsillitis, penile oedema, abscess, or an exanthem. In terms of route of transmission, the authors say their evidence from viral loads at the lesions, history of sexual exposure, and distribution of lesions “suggests close contact is probably the dominant transmission route in the current outbreak.”Lancet doi:10.1016/S0140-6736(22)01436-2Reducing childhood asthma exacerbations A 2021 NICE technology…
