He was renowned for his successful development of cancer services both locally and nationally for his clinical skills and experience.Ed was born in Oxford. He was brought up and educated at grammar schools in Worcester and Cheltenham. The son of an architect, he was offered a place at Liverpool University to read architecture, however he was also offered a place at University College London to read medicine. He chose medicine because he wanted a career caring for people. He was a year younger than his peers, who were the last year group required to do national service.
