NHS to tackle climate change: insulating buildings would be a good start
NHS England’s Greener NHS scheme smacks of novelty and greenwashing.1 Often the improvements needed are mundane and boring, although I can see why NHS England has started this scheme in an attempt to encourage eye catching, sexy ideas.My colleagues and I work in a single storey, flat roofed building owned and managed by NHS Property Services. It was renovated completely in 2010, but this did not include insulating the roof. Above the ceiling tiles is the bare metal of the roof. In winter it leaks heat, in summer it is too hot (it was 27°C on 7 July 2022 at desk level).The building has no environmental rating. If it is below E, as seems likely, we will be precluded from signing a new lease as this is now a legal requirement. From April 2023 all buildings must be E or above, even existing tenancies.
