A huge bill encompassing climate, healthcare, and spending was passed by the US Senate on 7 August in a narrow triumph for the Biden administration. The vote was 50 Democrats in favour and 50 Republicans opposed. The vice president, Kamala Harris, cast the deciding vote in favour.The Democrats used a “reconciliation” process to make the bill a financial one requiring only a majority vote. It bypassed the Republicans’ ability to use the filibuster process requiring 60 votes for approval but limited what the bill could include.President Joe Biden praised the bill, saying it would “lower the cost of prescription drugs, health insurance, and everyday energy costs and reduce the deficit, while making the wealthiest corporations finally pay their fair share.
