Persistent understaffing of the NHS is putting patients at risk, say MPs
The NHS and social care face “the greatest workforce crisis in their history” and “the absence of a credible government strategy” poses a serious risk to staff and patient safety for routine and emergency care, a damning report from MPs has concluded.The cross-party Commons health and social care committee accused the government of showing a “marked reluctance to act” on laying out how many staff are needed to meet the demands of the population now and in the future.The MPs’ report, published on 25 July, highlights that the workforce plan promised in the spring has not yet been published, and even when it is it will be a “framework with no numbers.” Without transparency on the numbers there can be little confidence that the government has got a firm grip on the crisis, the report says.The committee has gathered evidence over several months.
