WHO calls for urgent global action to support the health of refugees and migrants
The World Health Organization has urged governments to provide accessible healthcare services for migrants and refugees that are sensitive to their needs in order to achieve the health related Sustainable Development Goals for these populations.WHO’s report on the health of refugees and migrants, described as the first of its kind,1 highlights that one in eight people globally are migrants, and that their health and wellbeing are impacted by sub-optimal education, income, housing, and access to services, compounded by linguistic, cultural, legal, and other barriers.The report says that refugees and migrants have the potential to help economic and social transformation, citing examples such as the contributions of refugee and migrant healthcare workers during the covid-19 pandemic, and evidence from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development that shows that in some countries as many as half of doctors or nurses are foreign born.Speaking at a press briefing to launch the report,…
